What third-party testing means, and what it does not prove

"Third-party tested" is a common label. Here is what it actually establishes, and the questions it leaves open.

The plain meaning

Third-party testing means a laboratory that is not the seller and not the manufacturer analyzed a sample. The lab reports what it measured, by the methods it names, on the sample it received.

What it can establish

A genuine third-party report, verified with the lab, supports a narrow statement: the sample submitted, identified by the name and lot on the report, gave these results by these methods on this date. That is real and valuable evidence.

What it does not prove

  • That every vial in the lot matches the tested sample. A lab tests what it receives, and sampling choices matter.
  • That the vial you hold came from the tested lot, unless the lot numbers match.
  • That the material was unchanged after testing, through storage, shipping, and handling.
  • That the lab is fully independent. The seller usually chooses and pays the lab and chooses which sample to send.
  • Any property that was not tested. A purity test says nothing about endotoxin, sterility, or residual solvents.
  • Anything about safety, effectiveness, or suitability for any use. A COA is a chemistry document, not an approval.

What makes testing more meaningful

  • Lot-matched reports, with the lot number on both the COA and the vial label.
  • Report IDs that can be verified directly with the issuing lab.
  • Accredited labs, with the tested methods inside the accreditation scope.
  • Raw data attached: chromatograms and mass spectra, not just summary numbers.
  • Testing of samples pulled from finished, labeled stock rather than material prepared for testing.
  • Retesting when lots change, rather than one report reused over time.

How M Bio presents supplier references

M Bio publishes original supplier references in its Lab Results library. These documents retain the issuing laboratory, original client, tested sample, and lot. They are not confirmed M Bio lot certificates. Matching reports are marked pending where no suitable reference is available. Verify each document and its scope before drawing a conclusion about a received material.
